Speaking My Truth - A Black Nurse's Song

I'm not a victim, but I must say,

As a Black nurse, in white-dominated spaces each day,

No matter how kind or polite I might be,

If they're filled with hate, they'll still target me.

In nursing school and every place,

I've seen the looks, the cold embrace.

I try to be the best I can,

But still, they'll judge, they'll find a plan.

I stay out of the way, I try to blend,

I even try to be their friend.

But they'll find faults, they'll make me pay,

Their eyes on me, every single day.

If I do good, it's never praised,

If I'm quiet, they're still amazed.

If I speak, they'll shut me down,

They'll mock my afro hair, my food, my crown.

This treatment's subtle, it's hard to see,

Invisible chains, but they bind me.

Only we who wear this skin,

Can see the game, can feel the sin.

No matter how hard I try,

There are those who'll hate, and I know why.

It's not my skill or the care I give,

But the colour of my skin, the life I live.

Nursing while Black it's a heavy load,

With bias and hate, the road is cold.

One wrong step, and they'll come for me,

The system's harsh, no mercy, no plea.

But I'm not alone, we stand as one,

In unity, our strength's begun.

Together, we'll rise, we'll make it through,

Change will come, it starts with you.

So hear this call, fellow nurses, my friends,

Together, we'll see this struggle end.

Equality 4 Black Nurses leads the way,

For though they try to break our will,

We're here to stay, we're standing still.
